We are traveling to Austria, Germany and the Netherlands in early June. Outside the major cities, will we need reservations or will pensions be available?

Yes. We plan to spend a couple of days or so in the Mosel Valley and most of the time in Austria between Salzburg and Vienna. We have a hotel in Vienna. In the past I have traveled more off season and we have been able to just contact places and find rooms at the end of the day. I am concerned that June may be different.

I would reserve in advance June can be busy. And you could be searching for lodging alot. There is a french chain hotel that fits a range of budgets that may help you. ie.www.accorhotels.com.
I just booked Austria for May and it has been very diff to find vacancies for multiple nights.
