We will be in Germany on business the week of June 10-16. The following week we would like to travel by train through Switzerland, to Italy, flying home from Rome. Ideas? Suggestions? Fielding all good ideas!
Laura, There are numerous possible routes, so it would help to know which city in Germany you'll be in??? Switzerland may be a bit of a "detour" to reach Italy, but should be possible. Where in Switzerland do you want to visit and are there any other places in Italy you want to see? Cheers!
Probably the best route from Munich to Italy is over Brenner Pass to Verona. There are 5 ECs per day on that route.
If you want to see Switzerland on the way, you could take a direct (or 1-stop) train from Munich to Zurich, and change there for a train to Luzern. Spend a night there, and the next day take the train to Milan (about a 3-hour trip). This is your main gateway to the rest of Italy if you go through Switzerland. Other options would be (1) From Luzern, continue west to the Berner Oberland for a night (Mürren?) and then head to Milan via Brig. (2) From Zurich, take the train to Pontresina (about 4.5 hours) and spend the night there. This would be a long day if you did it all in one. From Pontresina, continue on the Bernina Pass route to Tirano in Italy, and change there for a train to Varenna. Spend at least a night in Varenna. Then head to Milan to connect to other places in Italy. All of these options will cut into your time in Italy. If you want to maximize your time in Italy, follow Lee's suggestion of the Brenner Pass route south through Austria to Verona.
