We will be in Switzerland for 8 days in early September. We plan to spend 4 days in Murren and 2 days in Lucerne. Any suggestions on where we could spend the remaining 2 days? We were thinking Como but wondering if it is too far from Murren/Interlaken. Thank you for any suggestions.
Are you arriving from other countries in Europe? Flying into / out of Zurich? If you wanted to experience a bit of French Switzerland, you could go to one of the cities / towns on Lac Leman (Lake Geneva). Many people really like Vevey which is close to Montreux but smaller, with a charming old town. Lutry is a beautiful town very convenient to the vineyards, which might be really fun in September.
I would recommend a several day trips, such as Bern, or Lausanne, or maybe even Montreux / Château de Chillon.
Appenzell is a lovely town and area in Switzerland. It is highlighted in Rick's Switzerland tour book. The cheese factory, the town and the surrounding rolling green hills are beautiful. As others asked, where are you flying into/out of? Are you travelling by train?
From what i remember of our trip last year, Lugano and St. Moritz are day trips from Bellagio( Lake Como) where we were staying. I think there is a scenic train that goes from Interlaken to Lugano and another one to St. Moritz, you could then perhaps day trip into Lake Como, if you just have 2 days. There is a slow boat that goes around the lake, and you can hop off and on in places like Bellagio, Varenna, Como and all the other beautiful little towns that dot that area. Villa Melzi and Villa Carlotta are worth a visit too. Just one thing to remember is that if you happen to be there on a Sunday, the frequency of the buses to and from Lugano and St. Moritz are reduced. But like others suggested, you may be better off visiting another area in Switzerland instead of spending time travelling. We are going to be in Interlaken early September too, we are hoping for good weather so we can go up to Jungfraujoch this time.
Have a great trip.
Thank you all for the suggestions. We are flying in and out of Zurich. We spent a week in the Lausanne/Montreaux area 2 years ago so want to explore other places this time. I will look into Appenzell. Does it make sense to go all the way to Como or Lugano from Interlaken and spend only 2 days there? If so, which place would you suggest? Thank you again.
From the German rail site, it appears that one can get from Interlaken to Como or Lugano in 4 1/4 to 4 3/4 hours respectively.
I just spent 4 nights at the Albergo Milano in Varenna on Lake Como and loved it. We had room # 2 with a large balcony that overlooked the lake. I loved this area and would go again.
