we have 8 days we plan to fly into Madrid visit Toledo than drive to the Basque country. Is there anywhere we should stop on the way to San Sebastian and is there a better place to fly home from instead of coming back to Madrid

Bilboa is pretty close to San Sebastian. Its home to the Guggeenheim Museum. I've never been but I'm going this fall.

If you like wine, you might consider the province of La Rioja, on the way to the Basque country. There are all sorts of romantic inns along the so-called "Wine Route," running from Haro to the southeast. Lovely country, and great wine! Unfortunately, there's no place closer than Madrid to fly home from. But Madrid's only a half day's drive from San Sebastian....about 5 hours.
