Is it accurate that tipping in Spain amounts to rounding up your bill to the nearest euro? Is that the same for everywhere, taxis to restaurants? Thanks!
Have you checked out: "Graffiti Wall > Money/Communication > Tipping Tips" yet? Lots of good information on this subject.
Tips are not expected in most places....in restaurants I usually round up as you indicate...taxis, mostly the same.
Tipping is not expected in Spain - in most places anyway. The locals do not tip as a matter of course. Depending on whether we were in a bar/cafeteria, roadside cafe or mid range restaurant ( we don't typically go to high end restaurants) we would leave no tip, round up to nearest 50 cents (e.g. if 2 coffees were 2.40, leave 2.50 mainly to save waiting for change) or if the bill in a restaurant was 27 euros we would probably leave 30. But in the main it is not expected. We are also from Australia where tips are not expected as a matter of course.
Tips are not expected and sometimes an insult! Round up and you'll do quite fine. Our friend in Madrid was always annoyed at our 'over tipping' until she taught us the proper ways.
I totally trust an iPhone app called Tipping Tips. It has saved me money and gives me tipping piece-of-mind in all the countries I travel to.
