My wife and I are spending 7 days in Germany and Austria. First time for her and second time for me, last there in high school. We are spending 3 nights at the Grand Hotel in Zell Am See. We will have a car to do day trips. My question is should I spend time in the Black Forest (Wolfach)? I have a friend there who will show me around, but that means only spending one day in Munich. Should I bag the Black Forest and spend more time in Munich? Is it worth the 6 hour drive at the expense of seeing Munich?
I'm usually up for going anywhere with a friend who knows the area and will show me around, but in my opinion, the Black Forest is not particularly spectacular in terms of natural beauty, particularly compared with what you'll already be seeing in the Austrian Alps. I would focus on Zell am See and Munich with 7 days. Will your friend be willing to travel to meet you elsewhere? Maybe they can show you around other, closer parts of Germany...
Zell-am-See? You're just north of the entrance to the Grossglockner High Alpine Highway. It'd be a sin to have a rental car and miss it. The south side of the mountain (north of Lienz) is still the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It's very easy to make a loop west and north thru the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck.
The Black Forest is okay, but the Western Tirolean scenery is breathtaking. You'd do better to spend the time in Munich--another great big city.
Hi, If being with your friend takes precedence over visiting Munich, then stay with your friend. If it's a choice between the Black Forest or Munich, I would choose Munich.
Thanks for all the replies. You've pretty much convinced me to bag the Black Forest. Thanks for the info on the alpine highway! It might be worth taking a scenic round-about trip back to Munich.
