7 Days in Bavaria Germany - What to see

We will be in Southern Germany (We're flying in and out of Munich) for 7 days at the end of October. We've never been to Germany before and I'm overwhelmed with all of the amazing things that we could see. We plan on renting a car to get around. We for sure want to see the Neuschwanstein Castle and have been considering 2 days on the Romantic Road with overnights in Wurzburg, Rothenburg and Fussen (recognizing that the stops along the road is what makes the drive worthwhile). We'd like to see the Alps and have considered one night (and day) in Salzburg as well. The Black Forest interests us too, for hiking opportunities, but we can't tell if it's too far out of the way. We're looking for tips and suggestions on what we should see and where we should go. Hotel suggestions are welcome as well. We don't want to stay in hostels, but not looking for high end either.
Thanks!

Hi Lindsay, With just 7 days I'd suggest this: Arrive Munich airport and base your first 3 nights in the Berchtesgaden area. Plenty to see and do in the area including Salzburg, less than 30 minutes away. Drive to either Mittenwald, Germany, Fuessen, Germany or Hall in Tirol, Austria (by Innsbruck) for 3 nights. Where to stay depends on your interests. Spend your last night in Munich or near the airport in either Erding or Freising. We've stayed 3 times (10/06, 10/07, 9/09) at the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden. www.mayringerlehen.de We've stayed 4 times (10/01, 10/03, 4/05, 11/10) at the Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol. www.badl.at We stayed twice (10/01, 10/03) at the Hotel zum Hechten in Fuessen. www.hotel-hechten.com We've also stayed twice (4/05, 10/06) at the Pension Schwalbennestl in Mittenwald. www.schwalbennestl.de If interested, we have photo's (3 pages) at: http://www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/index.html Paul

The Black Forest is out of your way. I'd suggest combining a later visit to the Black Forest with one to Alsace and Strasbourg. For this trip, either stay in Munich for the entire time and do day trips from there, or pick out two cities and stay in each for 3 days. Also, check out Bavarian Ben's website for more suggestions: http://www.bensbauernhof.com/

You should try to include a trip to concentration camp Dachau only about half hour or so from Munich.

Rothenburg is great - you'll have a really good time, especially if you are staying inside the wall. Consider going to Nuremburg (east of Rothenberg). We went to Saltzburg and bypassed Nuremburg. That was probably a mistake. I found Salzburg to be grossly overpriced and very overrated as far as tourist destinations are concerned FWIW.
