Need help! I have an HSBC ATM card with a 6 digit pin. I'm in Madrid and my ATM card is not working. My bank personal tell me to find a bank that accepts 6digits! Really? So how in the world can I find a bank that accepts six digit pins in Madrid so i can get cash out? Any help would be great. Thanks.
If you haven't done so already, try phoning the international help line for HSBC. It is surprising that this worldwide bank has no customer operations in Spain. Here is their info which is mostly bad news for you: http://www.hsbc.es/1/PA_1_1_S5/content/spain/corporate/pdf/Customer_Advice_Sheet.pdf You probably have a credit card which will allow you to get a cash advance. If it also has a six-digit PIN you will have to deal with a bank official rather than an ATM. Be ready to pay a huge amount of interest since such an advance is considered a loan.
Sorry, this is a very hard way to learn that four-digit PINs are important for international travel, especially as Chip-and-PIN cards become ubiquitous.
If I were in your shoes the first thing I'd do would be to go into a major bank in Madrid, explain your situation, and see if they can help. Odds are you're far from the first to have this problem. Odds are they'll have a solution. Disclaimer: I'm a dyed-in-the-wool optimist.
Can't you just change your PIN to four digits?
