Seven first cousins will travel to Sicily to visit our grand parents birth towns! were hitting a few towns in Italy first. How in the world do we get Seven women from Sorrento to Taormina! car, train? We've all decided a train put on to a ferry isn't a choice! Flying is not in our budget! Travel starts in NY 4/18/12. Venice, Rome, Sorrento then to Sicily!! It ends back in NY 5/1/12
Please your advise
Since this question is about Italy, might be best to delete it here ("to the West") and repost it under "to the Boot" for those who know Italy best. Have a great trip! It sounds like a special one.
"We've all decided a train put on to a ferry isn't a choice!" Why not? I thought it was rather fun. You can get off the train once it's on the ferry. Otherwise there's an overnight ferry from Naples, but you may find that flights are cheaper. Check Air One. And repost om the Italy board as suggested.
Flights from Naples are fast, easy and cheap! (Use Whichbudget.com to search for the lo-cost inter EU airlines. You can fly into Catania, and rent a van (call up Autoeurope in Maine, and talk to them about a van rental), or take the train or bus to Taromina. We have done both the train and the plane. The train trip is long and agonizing; but parts are absolutely beautiful. The final "train on the ferry" is fun, and no big deal. The overnight car ferry from Naples is another great option. It is not expensive, and you use up a night, rather than a full day, in your tranportation. Then you can pick up a rental car, or train or bus to Taormina. You must see parts of the island. A rental van, or two, makes it easy, but there is also public transportation available. BTW, this is the perfect time to see Sicily. Everything is beautiful and green, and we were even wading in the sea on May 1st one year. We used the Lonely Planet guidebook to plan our Sicily vacations and find our transportaion connections. You will have a wonderful time!
