Itinerary Questions

Travelling to Germany next week (last minute trip) for 11 days not including travel days. Flying into Frankfurt. Would it be too ambitious to take on Cologne, Nuremberg, and Munich along with a couple of days in Frankfurt or try to stay in the region a little south of Frankfurt? We are not youngsters and this is our first European trip. Cologne is a must for personal reasons, but I would appreciate any thoughts whether we should spend a two half-days travelling to Munich. Thank you.

Munich is not too ambitious. With 11 days, that gives you a couple in each place. Cologne you can see in a day. Others will have to advise on Nuremberg, but I'd give Munich at least 3 days.

Depending on how much time you need to spend in Koln, you could do a Nuremberg, Munich, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, end in Frankfurt type loop. Or from Koln you can go only as far as Nuremberg, then head west to Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber, Heildelberg and back to Frankfurt. You've got enough time for a quick view of each town.

Only name your list I have experience with is Nuremberg. The old section is an easy day. (We were jet lagged.) Definitely worth it. We didn't make it out to the Nazi sites. I understand that's another day, if that much, and interesting. We only went to Nuremberg to catch a river Cruise. Went a day early. And were pleasantly surprised. I would second the suggestions for Rothernburg ober der Talber and Bamberg. Have fun. Germany is a pretty country.

You will have plenty of time to see and experience the south of Germany and its beautiful towns. If you are driving you might want to go to the Lake of Konstanz. Gorgeous, surrounded by mountains. Also, a few favorite towns...Heidelberg, Munich, Dinkelsbuhl, Wurzberg...the list goes on. I love the Romantic Road drive as well...have a wonderful trip and enjoy the goulash suppe and the spatzel, and of course their great breads!

Nuremburg within the walls is very interesting, but can be done in a day. I would recommend trying to keep it in your plans
