Amsterdam lodging

After several trips across the pond, we have finally decided that we need to check Amsterdam off our list. What part of the city would you choose to stay in? Any lodging suggestions? We look for clean and comfy, have stayed in convents, the Ritz, and most everything in between, so we are up for anything but try to keep it in the 150 euro and under range. We are planning to rent bikes and use trains/buses to see the outlying areas. Thanks for your advice!

Boogaard's B and B is hard to beat at 125 euro for two, great location under 10 minute walk from Centraal Station, nearby bike rental.
Look up what is said about them on tripadvisor. This is a place that exceeds the comments. You'll find people on this board also raving about them.

The IBIS hotel next to the central station is hard to beat on location and price. Roger

Lise, here are two places I can suggest. This one is on the canal in the southern canal zone. The staff are friendly and top-notch. It's close to a tram stop and about a 10 minute walk to Museum Plein. The tram goes right to Centraal Station too. http://prinsengrachthotel.nl/index.php This one is not as quiet but just as nice. It's a 2 minute walk to the tram and Leidseplein. It's also a quick walk to Museum Plein as well. http://www.hotelalexander.nl/?newlang=en Both hotels have an elevator too. Have fun!

Another enthusiastic recommendation for the Hotel Brouwer. Book ASAP, as it's small and always fills up early. Lovely place.

Here's a second for Boogaard's. Great location, great food, quiet street (alley) but close to lots of what you'd want to see.

Thank you for all the good suggestions! Guess what I'm doing this weekend? I love this part of the trip almost as much as taking it :-)

We've stayed at the Hestia twice and like it , behind the Mariott & a block to the Leidseplein, on a nice quiet street. Bike rentals in their pleasant patio.
Son and hubby stayed at the Alexander and thought it stuffy in the summer. Have also stayed at the Ibis @ central station and while airconditioned, it and the crowds in the area aren't scenic. Good enough when just connecting tho.

Consider renting a houseboat along one of Amsterdam's canals. We stayed in a houseboat in the Jordaan district between the Anne Frank House and the Houseboat Museum a few years ago, and had a great experience. There are a lot of listings at http://www.houseboathotel.nl/
