Train question

How difficult would it be to get from Cinque Terre to the Berner Oberland area by train?

German Rail ("Bahn") web page. Use Interlaken Ost for the Berner Oberland. Depending from where in the Cinque Terre you start and how many connections, it's about a 7½ hr trip with at least 2 connection (Milan and Spiez).

Go to bahn.de and put in cities in those two areas. It will give a complete schedule.

It's an 8.0-9.0hr journey depending on your destination. It does take longer to get to Gimmelwald, Murren or Wengen. You will change trains in Milan and then north to Spiez where you change trains again for the journey into Interlaken. If you are traveling into Lauterbrunnen, you will need to change trains again in the Interlaken Ost train station (Interlaken has two train stations). If your destination is Gimmelwald, Murren or Gimmelwald, you change again to a train or cableway. Here's a big hint. If you are purchasing your tickets in Italy to get into Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Gimmelwald, Wengen, etc. the Italian ticket agents cannot see beyond Interlaken Ost on their screen. The reason is that the Jungfraubahn railway into Lauterbrunnen is a private rail system (but part of Swiss Rail) and they want to be paid in Swiss Francs. You can't do that in Italy. Simply buy the ticket from the CT to Interlaken Ost and then walk into the small train station and purchase the remaining tickets for your journey. This has happened to us and this is what we had to do to get to Lauterbrunnen from Italy.
