Arriving Wed. morning, driving to B&B in Ghent where we will be housed for the duration of our trip, through the following Monday. Any suggestions as to an itinerary? We are interested in art, architecture, and history (WWI, WWII, etc.).
"and history (WWI, WWII, etc.)." About half of the Royal Museum of Military History in Brussels is devoted to the world wars. The collection is huge and includes material from nearly every major combatant nation. The other half of the museum is mostly Belgian military uniforms... probably only of interest to a specialist.
Hi Judi. I recommend the following cities: Tongeren has Roman and medieval wall ruins Tournai has a Roman gate, the outlines of early Christian churches in town squares, and the fabulous medieval cathedral which is built over Roman baths and an early Christian gate and baptistry. Leuven has some pretty cool civic buildings, including an outrageous late Gothic (15th century, I think) town hall.
Hi Judi, You probably find the best, I believe, WWII site in Belgium in the city of Bastogne down south east. It hosts an impressive American Memorial and a very interesting museum, devoted to one of the greatest battles in WWII: The battle of the Ardennes (the famous "Nuts" quotation stems from here). The drive in the Ardennes is spectacular. Otherwise, are you interested in Napoleon's war?, then head to the museum and site at Waterloo just outside Brussels towards the south west. Bon voyage. Overall, with six days in Belgium, and given your interest in history, you could opt to go all the way down to Luxembourg (2H by car from Brussels) to visit the impressive American cemetary just outside the city centre. You'll find General Patton's gravesite here and detailed descriptions/maps of the WWII battles. Happy travel!
thanks all!
