6 day travel, with 1 year old, husband, me in Germany

Hello, First off I am trying to plan a trip to Germany March 10-16. We are planning on Salzburg and Munich. I was looking into going to Fussen for a night or so to see the King's castles. The only thing is that Neuschwanstein Castle, I've read in the Rick Steves book, seems to have a lot of steps throughout the tour. Carrying a 1 year old up and down steps will be a bit tiring. Do you think Salzburg and Munich will be enough for 6 days in Germany? without squeezing in Fussen? If we squeeze in Fussen will the castle tours be hard carrying around a 25 pound 1 year old? how are the tours a lot of steps? Thanks, Iris

6 days can be eaten up pretty easily in Munich and Salzburg alone. Neuschwanstein involves a major detour and most of a day for a 30-minute tour. If you're interested in King Ludwig you might instead stop at Herrenchiemsee Palace - in Prien, on the way between Munich and Salzburg. It's actually on an island in Chiemsee Lake where Prien lies: http://home.arcor.de/oberpfalz-nord/luftbilder-s/chiemsee.jpg Neuschwanstein isn't really a castle anyway, but a palace. The fortified structures and palaces in/near Salzburg may be of interest to you. There's also Nymphenburg in Munich: http://www.schloss-nymphenburg.de/englisch/palace/index.htm

Kind of like the White Tower in the Tower of London. You tour one floor at a time, then ascend a set of stairs to the next floor. To reach Neusschwanstein from the valley, you can either walk up a paved trail (suitable for pushing a stroller) or pay a small fee to ride a horse-drawn carriage. My memory may be incorrect on this matter, but I believe you must ascend a long set of stairs to reach nearby Hohenschwangau.

We took a shuttle bus up to Neuschwanstein Castle, and there should be room for your stroller. I think it was kind of steep going up there, so if you push the stroller up it could be a bit difficult. But, should you decide to skip it there will be plenty to keep you busy... especially with a one year old.
