We have a one day/one nite lay-over in Madrid on our trip home from Italy. Any suggestions for the best way to spend our time?

Definitely visit the Prado museum. Great cafes in the area as well. Walk back up to Puerta del Sol (unfortunately, a lot of construction there) and over to the Plaza Mayor....more great restaurants there, and, depending on when you're going, lots of artists displaying their wares. Lots of stores and shops in the pedestrian-only streets off Puerta del Sol. For night life, Plaza Santa Ana and all the little streets surrounding it have great restaurants and bars....great for tapas. Try Casa Patas for some traditional Spanish food and flamenco. Remember...no one eats in Spain until about 9.
