We will be driving to Munich on Tuesday, September 21. We will be coming from the Fussen area and stopping at Andechs, Nymphenberg and Dachau that day.
We are considering parking our rental car at the Dachau train station late that day and taking the S-2 in to town and our room at the YMCA (CVJM) near the Hauptbahnhof. We would like to leave the car at theDachau train station for 36 hours (two nights, pick it up the following morning) while we are in Munich. We would then take the S-2 back out to the Dachau station and continue our trip, heading to Melk.
Is there good, safe parking at the Dachau station? Or nearby?
Can you park overnight and leave the car for the 36 hours we plan?
Does anyone have any other suggestions? We don’t want or need to drive in downtown Munich, but we do need a car for the part of our trip before and after Munich.
Is this going to be possible, considering that this is during Octoberfest?
Is parking at the end of the S-2 in Petershausen any safer, better?
How about a downtown parking garage, at or near the Hauptbahnhof?
Thanks!
Mary Lou
I have no idea, but if all else fails, I would suggest parking at Munich airport. They're bound to have long term parking and you can just take the train into the city.
You also might try posting this question on http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/index.php?showforum=96 (or searching through past posts) - Toy Town Germany is an online forum for expats in Germany and has lots of useful information.
Here's an overview of Park & Ride in Munich (you park outside of the city at an S-Bahn stop and pay a package fee for parking and public transport). The website is in German only so open it thru Google Translator or Babelfish: http://www.parkundride.de/Or try this: http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/de/home/fahrgastinformation/mvv-netz/netzplaene/parkride/primmvv/index.html
Thanks to Mardee, Lee, Brad and Lee for the suggestions. We will probably check out the Dachau lot, as we'll be in Dachau at the end of the day. If that doesn't work out, we'll go to the airport and take the train in to the city.
Meanwhile I will check out the Toy Town Germany site for any other ideas. I think my last resort would to be to park downtown. We might not have much of a problem getting downtown after 5 or 6 P.M., but leaving town, heading toward Vienna during morning rush hour doesn't sound like fun at all.

Andreas' link led me to another page, Benutzungordnung, (Use Rules) also in German) on the MVV website that says the parking at P+R lots is only permitted during operation hours of the public transportation (4:49-1:52 at Dachau) . Overnight parking is €30. I'm not sure where you would pay.
Possibly the package deal might include longer parking. I would ask at the ticket counter in the Dachau station.
I've found a fine solution to my overnight Dachau parking problem: The nice people at the Hotel Central, a 10 minute walk from the Dachau train station, are reserving me a parking spot in their garage, at 6 euros per day. It's a reserved spot, relatively safe, and not expensive. Mary Lou
Thanks to all for this information, which I can hopefully use when I drive back to Munich from visiting Neuschwanstein. I know all about the trains and bus tours from Munich to the castle but I have reasons to be driving I can't change. So hopefully I'll find parking in Munich near the Christmas market before it closes that night..... Muchos Gracias
6 Euro/day that's indeed cheap. Sounds like a great solution.
