5 days Vienna - Wachau Valley - Cesky Krumlov help?

Spending one day in Vienna and then heading to Melk to see the abbey and do the cruise to Krems. From Krems, we are thinking about Salzburg (I've been there but other 2 travelers have not). We can spend the night anywhere along the way (Melk, Salzburg, ???) and will ultimately make our way to Cesky Krumlov for an evening and day (probably via Linz). Any must see places?(I've done Salzburg, Melk, cruise but want fellow travelers to see them too- but I'd be open to a few stops I haven't experienced). Thanks! Sites, overnight stop suggestions, hotels/pensions/hostels, etc.

5 days? You can spend that all in Vienna and not even begin to appreciate that beautiful city. Maybe do a day trip to Melk or an overnight in Durnstein while you base in Vienna. Vienna is a great major European city...one night? Maybe you should just go do your cruise on the Donau and head out to Cesky.

This takes some planning - three days is the minimum I'd allocate for Vienna. Salzburg can be done in a day and is reached easily by train. The Danube cruise will eat up a good part of your day sightseeing, so weigh that fact against your travel plans. But if you want to take in Cesky Krumlov/Krummau, then you need to consider the transportation options. A train goes from Vienna to Budejovice/Budweis, but then you need to take local transportation down to CK. Otherwise, bus service (incl. private conveyance) is available from Linz. All these take time, and while sightseeing through a window has its own charms, you will get less of the really interesting experiences of traveling through the region.

You might consider ckshuttle.cz from Linz to Cesky K. We used this service from our CK hotel to the Linz station and it was very good...clean, late model minivan and a personable young driver. A pleasant little drive as I recall.

If you are seeing Melk, then I wouldn't use the other time to visit Krems. I have been to both and Melk is the more elaborate of the two. Krems is very plain, however, if someone is there to play the organ, that would make the trip worth it. Otherwise, I'd put the extra time in Vienna. There is so much to see in that city. You can also make easy day trips to Schonbrunn Palace, Belvedere Palace, etc. Devra
