5 days of summer in Bovaria

Hello, We are going to Bovaria for 5 nights, and I am debating on whether we should stay in Munich or in one of the small towns of Bovaria not far from Munich. If we decide to stay outside of Munich, what would be the central location to do the day trips to Munich and the Romantic road to see the castles? Thank you,
Tatyana

I've only spent 60 days in Bavaria in the last 10 years, so what do I know. But I think Munich and the castles and the Romantic Road are a bit too much for 5 nights. I'd forget the Romantic Road (it's much overrated). I really like small towns, but, here, I think there is so much to see in Munich, I would spend my whole 5 nights there and do the castles as a day trip. If you have an extra day, see Augsburg or Landsberg am Lech or Nördlingen.

Hi Lee, Thank you for the advice! Where in Munich would you recommend us to stay? We are 3 people. Thanks,
Tatyana.

If you're going to stay in Munich for 5 nights then stay somewhere close to the Marienplatz or the Viktualienmarkt which is dead center of the big pedestrian areas. We've stayed in this hotel on 2 different occasions and were happy each time: http://www.hotel-am-viktualienmarkt.de/ Another nice hotel nearby: http://www.hotelblauerbock.de/ If you've got a hefty bank account this is a VERY nice hotel. I've only stayed once here:

Tatyana, Lee provided an excellent description of your options for that area. I would also suggest not bothering with the "Romantic Road", given the short time frame. Your best bet for Bavaria would be to base in Munich and perhaps take one or two day trips. The Castles are not on the Romantic Road, but rather in Füssen, which is southwest of Munich. You can visit that area either on your own (you'll have to arrange the reservations for the Castle tour) or with a guided day tour (check the website for Radius Tours). I took the guided tour and really enjoyed it. There's LOTS to see in Munich, so you could easily spend several days there, depending on your interests. I spent the better part of a day in the Deutsches Museum which has a huge number of exhibits. You might consider one of the excellent walking tours to get some idea on the history of Munich (Radius also offers those). You could also take day trips to Dachau, Berchtesgaden or even Salzburg (depending on your interests and what you want to see in that area). In Berchtesgaden you could visit the Eagle's Nest (only open at certain times of the year), the Dokumentation Centre (interesting history) or take a Salt Mine tour. I normally stay at Hotel Uhland in Munich and would certainly recommend it. It's about a 15-minute walk from the Munich HBf, which is very easy once you know the way. The Hotel is in a quiet residential area, the staff are great and the breakfasts are awesome! Happy travels!

Guys, Trying to find a centrally located hotel for a reasonable rate, everything is booked, or way too expensive. There are 2 alternatives: 1. Giesing - south east district of Munich 2. Neuhausen neighborhood Any suggestion? Thank you,
Tatyana.
