Day Trips out of Frankfurt, Germany

Suggestions, please, for day trips out of Frankfurt, Germany, as will be there for 3-4 days prior to joining up with group on July 25th. Will already have seen Heidelberg and stayed there, but would appreciate other stellar destinations for day trips in the Frankfurt area, that could be accessed by train travel. Thanks for all ideas!

The middle Rhine area is easily accessible by train from Frankfurt. The area between Bingen and St. Goar is a lovely area to cruise. There are lots of quaint towns along this stretch of the Rhine. You could also take the train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This is a little farther, but likely doable as a day trip. Rothenburg was my favorite place we visited in our two weeks in Germany.

I would go up to Kronberg, which has a really nice, very old intact castle, as well as plenty of old houses and cobblestoned streets. 22 min. ride on the S-bahn.

Or, go to Bad Homburg, which has the Saalburg reconstructed Roman fort, Hessen Park - an open air museum, and the palace residence of Kaiser Wilhelm. 20 min. ride on the S-bahn. Beautiful setting in the Taunus Mountains too.

A little bit farther but well worth your time is Büdingen. Original octagonal shaped castle and city walls, and great old streets to stroll in.

You might want to save a day or two just for Frankfurt as there is so much here to see and do. Make some time to go over to the neighborhood of Hoechst, as this is the best kept secret of Frankfurt. Just look for the Alt Stadt and you will be amazed. It is a true back door with no tourists.

Visit the open produce markets, Wed.& Sat. in Bornheim, Thur. & Sat. on the Konsablerwache, Fri. at the Schiller Str. Walk down the Berger Str. in Bornheim & the Schweizer Str. in Sachsenhausen. For a feast of the eyes, nose & taste, visit the Klein Markt Halle. You have a huge choice of museums too, but the most interesting to me is the Judengasse Museum, with the cellars of the Jewish Ghetto, occupied from 1462-1810. Go see the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall next to it.

You can also spend a day in Mainz. Visit the 1000 yr. old Dom, St. Stephens with the Chagall windows, St.Peters or St. Augustiner. I really like the Isis and Magna Mater temple ruins in the Romer Passage too.
