I will have a short layover in Munich, just one night, with a few hours the next morning to sightsee. What centrally located medium priced hotel would you suggest? What is the easiest fast way to get to and from the airport?

€10,40 is the price for a single person, Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (entire network day ticket). For 2-5 people, the Gesamtnetzt (Partner) Tageskarte is €18,80. That's probably the best deal for someone who plans on using any transport later that day (it's valid for unlimited travel until 6 AM the next morning). If all you want to do is get to your hotel, a 4 zone, Einzelfahrkarte is €9,60 for one person.
If you want to do some sightseeing the next morning before heading to the airport, the Gesamtnetz Tageskarte would be your choice.
You can easily buy one of these tickets ("Einzelfahrkarte
ab 4 Zonen" or "Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz") from an MVV automat in the airport S-Bahn station (just push the appropriate button).
