We are driving around the Normandy area then down to Loire Valley. How do we pay the tolls? Are there booths on the road. Do we need coins?
Thank you James. I'm expecting to pay, everyone says driving in France is expensive
Mary, you can also travel by car in France avoiding the toll autoroutes if you are not in a huge rush and want to actually see something on your way to your destination. The impression given sometimes on this board is that toll roads are obligatory.
If you go to www.viamichelin.com (similar to mapquest), you can get not only a route, using or not using superhighways; but they'll also tell you estimated time, fuel costs, and where and how much the tolls are. Be sure to get in the correct lane when exiting a toll road. There may be icons for electronic passes, manned booths, and unmanned booths - - depends on the importance of the exit. We always keep enough cash in hand, in case our cc won't work.
