Going to Lyon, France in May and want to go from there to visit the French Alps. Thought we would start from Lyon and visit the Northern Alps then work ourselves down into the Southern Alps. Any suugestions on neat places to visit in the North/South. Are experienced travelers but have learned that altho Travel Guide books are helpful starters there is no substitute for talking to people who have actually visited those places we are interested in seeing.
One place I would definitely recommend is Annecy and its area. Also, the Mont Blanc area with Chamonix, l'Argentière and Combloux. In the southern Alps, there are 2 National Parks, the Ecrins south of Grenoble and very close to Gap and Briançon, the other one is the Mercantour, that's even further south on the way to the French Riviera. They are very different but both beautiful. I'd also recommend the area of Lake Serre Ponçon in the Southern Alps. That area is beautiful and May is a wonderful time of the year.
