Itinerary Critique

Itinerary draft #2. Before, we were planning on 24 days but we decided we had to go to Greece so we added a week. We found some cheap roundtrip flights from Rome to Athens and we just had to. This itinerary hits every major city each of us (mid 20s married couple) wants to see.

5/2 - Cruise ship drops us in Barcelona, 3 nights

5/5 - Train from Barcelona to Paris the night before OR flight this morning, 5 nights (1 day side trip - London)

5/10 – Day in Paris, night train to Munich, 4 nights (1 day side trip - Fuessen)

5/15 – Train to Salzburg 1st thing, 1 night

5/16 – Either morning or night train today to Venice, 3 nights

5/20 – Train to Florence, 3 nights (1 day side trip - either Best of Tuscany tour or Siena)

5/23 – Train to Rome, 3 nights

5/26 – Fly to Athens, 3 nights

5/29 – Train (?), bus, or car to Nafplio (stop at Corinth and/or Mycenae on the way), 3 nights

6/1 – Fly to Rome, 1 night

6/2 – Fly to JFK for a bit to visit family before home to LAX

We could possibly add 1 more day to the itinerary but I think that is it. I wanted to give the big cities atleast 3 nights (exception London) and do a couple of 1 day side trips. In Greece, we would love to do some of the islands (Mykonos, Paros, Santorini) but Athens, Corinth, and Nafplio seemed a better fit for the time we have. My husband said as long as we visit Athens and Corinth, he’s good this trip, and I personally love what I’ve seen on Nafplio. So, what do you think? What would you suggest that could possibly refine to maximize our time there but still visit our desired cities?

I could only thing I could think of two things when I first looked at this is, how much baggage are you taking to support this venture? And it sounds like what a veteran TA once called a "BB itinerary(before baby). I would call this "ice skating through Europe" rather than slowing down and letting you soak up the area and letting the area soak into you. I would suggest is you decide if you want to go north or south, going from Barcelona through the south of France, on to Italy, then to Athens and the islands. May weather can be pretty iffy in Paris and Munich whereas it will probably be better south. On business I have to dress for both areas, so I start North (UK, NL, DL, Poland) and then go south and do it with a 22" roll-a-board and a business back pack. Learned the hard way running up and down stairs to catch train connections. I hope the other posters don't spank me too violently!

This is not my kind of trip; but you are young. We're old. However, I would suggest that you cut out London. It will cost you plenty in money and/or time; and a day isn't enough even for a taste.

I wouldn't plan a trip like this either; I prefer to concentrate on one or two regions. That said, I know I could have a great time on this trip. You'll see a lot and the pace isn't too bad.

If you are dying to see London and can afford it, go ahead and do the day trip. Of course you will just scratch the surface, but scraching the surface in London can be a lot of fun.

I hope you have a great trip!

wow. sounds tiring--and i'm 30--but i am VERY jealous (says the girl...er...woman...who is spending a month in europe this summer, too). it also sounds like you have it very well planned out. have a great trip, and be proud that you could include all of those places. enjoy!
