My parents did houseboating on the Canal du Midi and the Garonne river and used this company: http://www.connoisseureurope.com/. They loved it. They also said you have to rent a boat at least one size bigger than you think you need as the cabins and everything on board are tiny and that e.g. you need an extra bedroom to store your luggage since there is no such thing as a trunk or so.
