Carry-on bags on Lufthansa

This will make me seem very dense, but I need clarification as to just what we can bring on as carry-on luggage on a Lufthansa non-stop flight to Germany. We are traveling with our three adult children at Christmas, leaving Dec 25 and returning Jan 1. We would really like to avoid checking any luggage (the girl in our group insists she can't bring enough in a carry-on!). I understand that we can carry on one bag no heavier than 8kg. Can we also bring a backpack? The website says additional carry on can include: # A handbag, wrist bag or small bag (or small laptop bag) and their content

A coat, shawl or blanket

A small camera or a pair of binoculars

An appropriate amount of reading material for the journey

Thanks for your patience with this question. Looking to hear from anyone with personal experience.

I think they say you can also bring on a small laptop in it's case. Any secondary bag has to fit under the seat in front of you.

In my experience, they don't check. I saw people boarding in Germany with what looked like entirely too much luggage by Lufthansa rules. But, 1st class passengers are allowed more, maybe they were in 1st class. There were also people that had bags with a tag on them saying that they had been cleared at check in. You can try to stretch the rules if you want to, but realize that if you get caught, you have no complaint.

As for size, my bag when I left the last time for Germany weighed less than 16#. You don't really need that much weight.

LOL. Hi, Lee. I found the bag you mention on your website and am considering buying it. Children have hard heads, especially girls who want to "look good" in their pics. I just roll my eyes.

Hi,

We just flew Lufthansa r/t EWR to Munich in Sept. Steve has it correct, although I did see many bags being carried on (in coach, where we were) that were obviously larger than what is allowed. They didn't weigh our carry on bags or even look at them going or coming home. I guess it's just a gamble if you plan on "stretching it". My wife's checked bag was over the weight limit coming home but the woman at the counter looked at us and told us she was putting it through and not to worry. You never know.
