My sister and I will be traveling from Paris to Amsterdam where we will spend 4 nights. We'd like to stay near Amsterdam...not in the city itself...any suggestions? Where would the best deals be found? Haarlem?...what other towns?

The nearest cities are Haarlem and Utrecht. The latter is 30 minutes away by train, Haarlem is 20 minutes. I prefer to stay in Amsterdam, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with Haarlem.

Also consider staying out on the ocean. It's close but feels a world away from Amsterdam. Last time I was there I spent my last night in the Best Western at Zandvoort. Both it and the Beach House Hotel are within walking distance of the train station and the beach, and there are restaurants nearby. You'll pay less for a room of the same quality.
