how do i track down an inexpensive hotel in munich? i'll be coming into the city alone by train - so ideally something i can get to relatively easily from the train station. thank you.
I have good luck with "Hotel Reservation Service".
Once you get your list of hotels, you can sort them by distance from the train station or the city center. They come listed by price automatically with distances shown.

I stayed at the Hotel Ludwig opposite the train station. Tourist class. Clean, pvt bath, friendly staff. Review their web site for specifics. Also go to tripadvisors.com and plug in hotel name under search for recent reviews.
I'm on my soap box for VENERE.COM.
I've used it a bunch and found hotels right where I needed them, and in the price range I wanted.
I just booked a trip, air/hotel on Orbitz for Munich. Great price for air/hotel for my trip, you might see if you can just book a hotel on the site...however, they are not as specific about location as Venere.com seems to be.
If I ever use one of those booking sites, HRS, Venere, etc, it will be a very cold day in Hades.
I've looked at them carefully and, in small towns, they don't tend to show the small, family run establishments that you can find on the town website, the places that offer the most economic prices and the best cultural experiences. In small towns, they will mostly offer, IMO, only overprices properties that can't get bookings any other way. In major cities, they offer somewhat competitive, but rarely much lower, prices to what you can find on the hotel's own website, which they never show on their site. (If their prices were better, they wouldn't mind you going to the hotel's own website, would they?) If they show lower prices, it's usually without breakfast, which they then offer back at an exorbitant price.
Three places that seem to get recommendations from people on this site are:
Hotel am Viktualienmarkt, www.hotel-am-viktualienmarkt.de,
Hotel Blauerbock, www.hotel-blauerbock.de, and
Hotel Royal, www.hotel-royal.de.
We stayed for 2 days at the Wombat Hostel (Munich) which is around the corner from the Hauptbahnhof Central.
Our room was VERY clean...2 beds and bathroom with shower in room.
The price is now 35 Euros and 3.50 Euros for breakfast.
I am in my 60's and felt very comfortable. We were only there to sleep and shower.
They have them also in Berlin and Vienna.

Hotel Uhland...10 minute walk from Munich's Hauptbanhof:
I'll also recommend the Easy Palace (we stayed at the Easy Palace Station hotel). It's right next to the train station, very clean, and although we did the shared bathroom you can get a private one for more cash. They provide towels, linens and breakfast in the price, and the breakfast is pretty good. Plus they have an elevator which isn't necessary but pretty nice if you spent the whole day running around Munich on foot.
thank you so much everyone!!!!
Julia,
I'd also highly recommend Hotel Uhland. Although it's only about a 10-minute walk (as stated in an earlier post), it may take longer for those unfamiliar with the area. On my first trip there I took a Taxi from the station. It's not far, so the Taxi wasn't too expensive.
The Hotel is located in a quiet area, has fantastic breakfasts, comfortable rooms and the staff/owners are wonderful. Check their web site for details.
Happy travels!
