Hi,
I would like to spend 3 nights in St Goar or Bacharach. I would like to then leave from Koln to go to Berlin. Things I want to see are Burg Elz, Rheinsfeld Castle, Marksburg Castle, boat ride on river, the cathedral in Koln. Please help me plan this.

You might be a little short on time or long on things to do. Both Rheinfels and the Marksburg will take most of half a day.
Last year I went from Cochem via Koblenz to Koeln and on to Hannover using a €29 Dauer-Spezial fare which I purchased online from the Bahn website. What most people don't understand is that with the Dauer-Spezial-Ticket, you can schedule a stopover. I spent two hours in Koeln when I changed trains. You just have to build it into the ticket using the "via" function.

I went to Rheinfels in April. You might want to consider what type of castle you want to see. Rheinfels is in ruins, with no ceiling, just rooms made out of rocks, cobblestone flooring, etc. There is no real tour (although Rick has an audio, it is self-exploration.We went with two 9 year old and it was the perfect castle for us, allowing them to run around like crazy, pretend sword fight and admire a beautiful view of the Rhein as well as other castles etc. If you are looking for a more "real" castle, with tapestries, etc, and a tour, Rheinfels is not for you. Other tip: if you do go for a tour in one of the castles, you might want to confirm that it is in English, or ask if there is a certain time when the English tour occurs. Have fun!
