We have 3 full days and 4 nights to spend in Switzerland the last of March (21-24). I am real interested in the Berner Oberland region, but not sure in March. Rick's book is mostly for the summer - what location suggestions does anyone have for this time of year?
Thanks for your help!
The BO is absolutely stunning anytime of year. However, it's still the late ski season in late March in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the upper villages (Wengen, Murren, Grindelwald, Gimmelwald, etc.). Expect snow. You can still stay in these areas however, be aware that "shoulder season" (the break between winter and summer) begins in late April and goes through May and possibly into early June. Many places will close. Still, many won't. You will need to check with the hotel sites. In Murren, the better hotels are the Eiger and the Fontana (See www.tripadvisor.com). In Lauterbrunnen, where the main train station is, I recommend the Hotel Silberhorn (www.silberhorn.com). Wengen is also nice but I haven't stayed there.
Thank you both very much -- has anyone been there the end of March?
I have been to Murren in the summer and it is a wonderful area. We also were in Zermatt one summer, but were there the last week in March a few years ago. It was a beautiful time to be there. Still great skiing for my husband in the upper areas and the town was starting to bloom spring flowers. People were hiking everywhere. Still cold enough for winter coats, but we were not freezing. I don't ski, but found plenty to do. My husband and I met sometimes for lunch on the mountains. I rode the lift up. We had dinner together in the evening. Be sure to go to the top of "Piz Gloria" if it is a clear day. We had breakfast there when in Murren.
