3 days for Austria, Romantic Road

We will have 3 1/2 days for Austria and the Romantic Road by car. Need to end up in Frankfurt the final night for flight out next day. I was wondering what suggestions folks have for a couple days in Austria?

Which part of Austria would you be coming from? The states directly to the south of Bavaria (Vorarlberg and Tirol) or to the southeast (Salzburg and Oberösterreich)? And what time of year? I'll await your answer before explaining why driving the Romantic Road is one of the most over-rated experiences in Germany...

We enjoyed three days in Linz last October, good eating, good shopping.

Unless you've already seen alot of Germany, I would forget Austria this trip. I'd go from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and spend the night. Then I would go to Bamberg and spend 2 nights. On your final day, drive from Bamberg to Frankfurt. You will see one of the nicest towns on the Romantic Road as well as one of the most beautiful towns in Germany.

I'd go from Munich to Salzburg for an othernight, and then from Salzburg (back through Munich) to a town you want to stay at on the Romantic road for the next night or two (or switch to another town on the road for your third night). Salzburg will provide scenery that you won't get on the romantic road, but it's small enough that you can see much of what the area has to offer with just an overnight from Munich.

Thank you all for your suggestions. This will help me decide if I can't get our trip extended for several more days.

Hi, How many nights do you have before your last night in Frankfurt? What do you want to see in Austria? The Alps? Salzburg? If starting in Munich, with 3.5 days (I'm assuming 3 nights here) I'd suggest skipping Austria (as Betty suggested) and heading towards Frankfurt. Rothenburg ob der Tauber (and area) is worth 2 nights alone. The Romantic Road is nothing to go out of your way to drive. If you've ever been on a 2 lane road through the countryside, that's basically all it is. I'd drive the highways (as we have done) for much of the trip between Munich and Rothenburg. If it's the Alps that are of interest, maybe drive from Munich to Mittenwald for a night or 2. Mittenwald is a gorgeous Bavarian village with a mountain backdrop. If you'd rather see Salzburg, then head there for a night or 2. Both Salzburg and Mittenwald are about 2 hours from Munich. Paul
