3 day side trip from Beaune by train?

Hello! I am planning my third trip to Paris this summer--the first time was a few days on a great ETBD trip, the second time I went with my mother and sister for a week (and 5 days in Venice) and this is my first time going to europe by myself. My current itinerary is 2 nights Paris (to get over jetlag/decompress), 3 nights Beaune (over the weekend so I can go to the market) 3 nights ??? and then I'm renting an apartment for 7 nights in Paris.

I don't drive so I will have to go by train and I'm basically looking for a 3 night trip somewhere from Beaune. I was originally thinking Avignon or Strasbourg/Colmar but I can't find trains from Beaune to any of these places. Will I have to take a train back to Paris first? I don't really want to spend more than 3 hours on a train because that will really cut into my time to enjoy.

Thanks for your advice!

Thanks Kent! That site is really helpful.

If anyone has any suggestions for a short trip I'd be glad to hear them.

EDIT: I'm willing to go more than 3 hours if it's really worth it, I just don't want to spend 2 days out of 3 travelling back and forth :)

Thanks again Kent! :) Avignon is one of the areas I wanted to visit and it's not too far (train wise) so I think I'll look around that area.

Darrell,
After three nights in Beaune, we went to Dijon for a night and then to Colmar... actually, Dijon to Colmar in a reasonable time, in one day, is possible and Colmar was wonderful...Check it out. George Werner, Pittsburgh

Hi George, thanks for your reply! Hmm this looks interesting too because although the train ride from Beaune/Dijon to Colmar is a bit longer than I had hoped for, I just realized that the train from Colmar(and Strasbourg) back to Paris is not that bad. Decisions, decisions eh?

We went from Beaune to Annecy. Probably a bit longer than 3 hours, but perhaps the most beautiful place I've ever been too.

Hi everybody, thanks for your responses. I have decided to book 3 nights in Strasbourg so I can daytrip to Colmar, etc. if I feel up to it or enjoy the little city centre. It's a longer and slightly more complicated journey from Beaune than I had originally wanted but then it's only just over 2 hours straight back to Paris and it looks like a great little city. I've booked the Hotel Gutenburg if anyone has any experience/feedback on that hotel.

Thanks again for all your help!
