Can I manuever a manual wheelchair up the Champs Elysee to the Tower/Arche? I am a healthy 71 yr old lady, a right leg above the knee amputee. How good are handicapped vacilities in Paris?
Thank you so very much for your quick responses, Norm and Tom! If it's a gradual incline, I think I can do just fine, stopping along the way to take in the "atmosphere"! I don't care about getting "inside"
the Arc or Tower...just to actually see them will be enough for me! (I'm also an amatuer artist.) An attorney friend told me that there is handicapped access to the Louvre even though Louvre personnel will tell handicapped people that there isn't access. Do you know if there is handicapped access to the Louvre?
Sue: Google "disabled visitors Louvre Museum" for details on how to enter, either from the Pyramid or the Carousel level.
Unfortunately, it's a long uphill slope up the Champs Elysee to the Arc de Triomphe. And the only way to access the Arc itself across the very busy traffic circle is to use an underground passage, which has stairs. I don't recall seeing an elevator there. But may I suggest you visit this website for more information and assistance.
You shouldn't have much trouble rolling along the Champs Elysee as long as you can wheel yourself up a long, very gradually increasing hill. The inside of the Arc itself, however, is not wheelchair accessable. The Eifel Tower, by contrast, is a considerable distance from the Champs Elysee. You can easily reach the elevators in a wheelchair.
Thank you, Norma, for the info. to get into the Louvre! I used to live in Buffalo and have travelled
in Canada/Quebec many times. It's a beautiful country with a wonderful night (and day) life!
