Black Forest?

Need some advice from experienced Germanophiles...

In September we're staying a week south of Munich, then driving to the Mosel area to stay another five days/four nights. We will have a car and our options are to drive straight through to Beilstein (probably about 5 hours) or to go more leisurely and stay in the Black forest one night en route.

Will it be worthwhile to drive through the Black Forest and spend only one night, or would it be better to spend the extra day exploring along the Mosel? (Also, staying a fifth night in our inn in Beilstein would cost us only an additional 38 Euros.)

Whatever advice you give would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with others 1 night in Blk Forest is nice. another option is 2 nights on the Rhine ie. Bacharach. I love Beilstein and the mosel but 4-5 nights is alot unless you are cycling alot. We also stayed in Beilstein and loved it.

Those places arent on the Mosel. Go to Cochem. Great castle there, good wine, and Burg Eltz (even better castle) is nearby.

I don't think Baden-Baden is very authentic German. I would rather stay in Freudenstadt, which is actually in the Black Forest.

I would also choose to stay in the Black Forest. One night is plenty. The forest is not spectacular, but it is worth a visit.

I agree the Black Forest is very much worth visiting. Cochem was incredible, we loved and hope to return again someday. We visited these places on a river cruise a few years ago. Really enjoyed this area!

Happy Travels!

But Cochem is on the MOSEL . . I am confused!

The Black Forest area is lovely, but in my opinion, not spectacular.
I would stay along the Mosel, hands down, IMHO.

Hi Charlie,

This isn't an answer to the Black Forest question but just another option to consider... overnight in Rothenberg ob der Tauber on your way to the Mosel.

We did the Roman-Irish baths in Baden-Baden years ago. Best $30 I ever spent. I'm sure it's more now, but for what you get, you can't beat it. Makes for a nice break in the middle of the trip.

If you choose the Mosel, it will be a relatively easy hop on the local trains or by car from Beilstein.

As was said before, Cochem is nice and Burg Eltz. You could also follow the Mosel to Trier and see the Roman Ruins (as I recall the largest outside of Italy) and a nice town.

We did the RS Germany-Austria-Switz tour a few years ago and really enjoyed the Black Forest Open-Air Museum - Vogtsbauernhof. It's a collection of farmhouses from all over the Black Forest and covering several centuries. We only had a couple of hours, but I would love to go back and spend more time there. So my vote is to spend a night in the Black Forest and a day at the museum. Have a great trip!
