ZUGSPITZE

I noticed they offer a one-way ticket up. I assume one an hike back down w/o losing their life? We walked down from Schlithorn. It took a while but was OK.

we were just there in July and there were signs everywhere saying you should be en experienced hiker and have the appropriate gear. Granted these were the warnings from the Alpspitze, the neighboring mt. We didn't actually go up the Zugspitze. (too pricey and all my German family said it wasn't as pretty as the Kreuzeck and Alpspitze.)

that's my two cents.

Another option down is by gondola, although this doesn't take you all the way back to Garmisch. I can't guarantee it, but I believe you may be able to ski all the way down as well. Hiking the Zugspitze is not too challenging from a technical perspective, although it is very physically demanding.
