Flying in and out of Madrid. We are interested in historical sights, UNESCO cities, relaxing and good food and wine. We will be using the trains/buses. I've read about Seville and Granada. If we base ourselves in Seville for 6 days and Granada for 6 days, are we able to take the train or bus to the smaller towns in the area for a day trip? I've heard about towns that have white houses that are very charming. Does anyone know what towns I'm speaking of? We will be spending our last 2 nights, one night in Toledo and the last night in Madrid. We're not a fan of big cities, preferring the charm of smaller towns.
A little random input. 'If we base ourselves in Seville for 6 days and Granada for 6 days, are we able to take the train or bus to the smaller towns in the area for a day trip?' - Yes. However there are a number of bus companies required in and out of Seville, it will depend where you wish to go. If the 'pueblos blancos' (the white towns of your query) you would only be able to see probably a couple in a day, the scheduling is not designed for you, the tourist. Additional, from Seville which could suit based on your criteria - Carmona and .... well just take the map and google a town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Towns_of_Andalusia Granada as a base gives you the likes of Guadix or Alcala la Real as one hour each way by bus, Montefrio perhaps. Perhaps Priego de Cordoba one and a half hours each way (is that too far?) Plenty of other very modest size villages, but you might find them ultra sleepy or 'closed', if not careful. A bus company you might need - http://www.alsa.es/portal/site/Alsa The national train company - http://www.renfe.com/ - I suggest for the journey, if going directly between Seville and Granada.
I did a similar trip a couple of years ago. But I built in a couple of days in Ronda and Cordoba. I'm not a fan of big cities either but 2 nights in Madrid would be a minimum for me. One night in Toledo is enough or even an afternoon. Enjoy your trip whatever you decide!
Seville can take 3-4 days easily. Cadiz is worth at least one night. Cordoba is a good daytrip. Wouldn't want to spend more than a day there. Granada is good for 2-3 days.
Thanks. We really don't want to pack up and move every few days, preferring to base ourselves and take trips to outer towns within an hour to an hour and a half.
