My wife and I will be in San Sebastian for the first time this September. Has anyone ever stayed at the Hotel Niza (we are tentatively booked there)...would love some feedback. Also any suggestions on what to do where to eat (inexpensive-tapas/pinchos). Thank you all for your feedback. Hunter
We did not stay at that hotel so cannot comment on that. We did eat though, and very well! Rick's guide recommends a few pintxos bars but there are lots of them, just look for the crowds of locals..or for how many used napkins are thrown on the floor. Your hotel can probably recommend some and show you where they are located in relation to your hotel. If you are staying in the old city you will find that it is small and nothing is very far apart. Here are a couple of suggestions: Bar Nestor's (11 C. Pescaderia) is not really a pinxtos bar but they offer some food, they are known for their fresh tomato salad, and the Tortilla de Patatas that they bring out at about 20:00; when its gone, its gone. I was fascinated by the walk-up window for drinks. So we started there then moved on to the other places that specialize in pinxtos. Gandarias (on a corner, #23 C. 31 de Agosto) had good traditional pinxtos. They also have a sit down restaurant with traditional Basque food but we did not eat there (they also have a website in English). I don't recall the names of the other bars, but plan to do a "crawl" of trying one or two pinxtos at each place, it may not be a balanced meal but by the end of the evening you will be full.
