2 Days in Heidelberg, Germany

My best friend and I are going to Europe in September and have set aside two days in Heidelberg, Germany before heading to Munich & Fussen. What to do in Heidelberg for two days? Any particular places/sights that we must-see?! Where to stay? Any insider information would be helpful!

P.S. We're also going to London, Paris, Salzburg, Venice, Rome & Zurich.

Thanks!!
Wendy

Heidelberg is a lovely place to just walk around and people watch. If I were you, I would walk the pedestrian zone from one end to the other, then sit at an outside table and people watch.

The Red Ox is fun, a really old student restaurant ala The Student Prince.

We like to eat lunch in the outside cafe of the museum (on the right side, halfway between the market square and the end of the pedestrian zone).

A castle tour is fun, or just a free walk around the castle grounds.

It's also fun to walk across the bridge over the Neckar and back.

Heidelberg is one of my favorite cities. I always go to the castle when I'm there, and almost as good is sitting in Kornmarkt Platz in the evening and just watching people and admiring the castle. It's fun to take the funicular up to Konigstuhle and get the view from up there.
We enjoy staying at Hotel Pfalzgraffen. It's nice and close to the Hauptstrasse.
Gute Reise!

A lovely day trip is to take the boat from Heidelberg up the Neckar river to Neckarsteinach and then walk up to Dilsberg, a genuine medival walled town. It's like a smaller Carcassonne or Rothenburg, very charming and authentic. During the boat ride thru the narrow winding Neckar valley you can spot several castles and ruins. From Neckarsteinach you can also take the train back to Heidelberg, in case you don't want to take the boat again.
