I am going to be in Vienna 1 day and Innsbruck next day. Can someone please recommend how to best spend these 2 days?
What days of the week are you there, San? Vienna's an easy one to fill. If you like palaces, hit Schonbrunn in the morning. Head on back to the ring up Maria Hilfe Strasse if you want to do some shopping. Grab the new ring tram for a great view of all the buildings. Opera house has tours around 2 and 3. From there it's an easy walk to Cathedral, along the other main shopping, area. You could go check out the main palace as well, and maybe spend an hour or two in the Shatzkammer.
In the evening, grab nice meal, same area. Head to a concert or the Opera (standing room at the opera is just a couple of dollars, and the sound is great!), and then finish your day with a late night visit to a cafe. :)
Believe it or not, pretty easily doable in 1 day, and not too exhausting... LOL :)
Not too sure on Innsbruck, I've only stopped there briefly. But if you have other questions about Vienna, let me know.
Public transportation in Vienna is super quick, and easy.
There's a lot more to see and do in Salzburg than in Innsbruck.
Hi San,
Agree that Salzburg is more worthwhile than Innsbruck. If you are going to go anyway, I'd suggest seeing the old town (pretty small), the Hofkirche and Ambrass castle. Also, for amazing views.... a funicular from the old town takes you up to Hungerburg (very small village) overlooking Innsbruck and from there you can ride a cable car up into the mountains.
If you have a car, you can drive up to Hungerburg and get the cable car.

The answer to your questions on Innsbruck depends on what time of year you will travel and what you like to do. For winter sports, Innsbruck is one of world's greatest cities. In the summer, the region offers some spectacular hiking and biking. The city boasts one of the most visually impressive surroundings of any in Europe (the mountains here can not compare to those around Salzburg). But the city itself... it has a pleasant old town, but most of it is rather modern and industrial.
If you're in Innsbruck, hike up past the zoo and to the small town above.
STICK TO SALZBURG you can get to it from innsbruck by direct train.
You may want to consider going to Hall in Tyrol, it is just a few miles from Innsbruck (6 miles, I think). We loved it! It is a medieval village, very beautiful and it doesn't seem to be a big tourist area. It is great just to walk around, have coffee and enjoy the mountains and village.
Salzburg is one of my favorite places. It has a beautiful and compact center that is great for walking.
If Salzburg won't work, stop in Hall in Tyrol on the way to Innsbruck. It also has a nice medieval center that is good for a stop.
Is Salzburg reachable by train from innsbruck?
Also,
any trains to "Hall in Tyrol" from innsbruck or Vienna?
Hi Kavita Dane,
You can easily get from Innsbruck to Hall in Tirol (note the correct spelling) by either train or bus. Very short ride. While we haven't used public transportation, It's explained in detail in RS book.
