Would like to use the Murren area as a "home base" in which we can stay there for 4 days or so and utilize the train network to do one day trips and return that same night. Any comments on visiting (not staying at) places like Chamonix/Zermatt in one day an advisable game plan?

Mürren is a lovely base for hiking and for seeing the immediate area, but it is impractical for other areas. Mürren to Zermatt is 4 to 5 hours each way; Mürren to Chamonix is even longer.

Agreed. Murren, Chamonix and Zermatt are all too distant from each other for day-tripping. Murren is a great destination, but just about the only places you can easily visit from Murren are Gimmelwald and Piz Gloria. And the gondola ride up to Murren is quite expensive for going back-and-forth.
Switzerland may look small on a map, but its mountains, so beautiful to look at, add hours to your travel times.
