Salzburg

We are traveling to Salzburg in September and are lookinbg for recommendations of places to eat and visit. Like to visit places where locals hang out - not just tourist destinations. Love corner bars!

Then you have to visit Augustiner's (affectionately known as Augie's), a brewery/beer hall frequented by everyone from students to families to old men hanging out with their friends.

I stayed at the Goldene Krone and right outside it were some restaurants that were full of families dining together. I think that the place mentioned earlier is not far.

In Salzburg I liked the Residenz Gallery located in "New" Salzburg. It had good landscape paintings made in the 1800s.

The Augustinerbräu is directly in town and quite popular with Americans, but the big brewery supplying most of Western Austria is Stiegl. See it (and dine there) at Stieglwelt in the Kendlerstraße a little west of downtown.

Thanks to all of you for these wonderful suggestions! Makes it even more exciting to have places that come recommended - so keep them coming! Can't wait - sounds like Salzburg is a wonderful city with great historical things to see and places to go and just sit and enjoy just....sitting!

Janna, don't forget to visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which is on a hill above the city. You'll need to take the "Festungsbahn" (Funicular) from the city. I found it took a while to explore the Fortress as there are so many things to see!

I also stayed at the Goldene Krone and had a great time. The owners were wonderful! There's a nice Italian restaurant close by (go left when you leave the Hotel, and the restaurant is about a one minute walk, on the right side. One thing I especially enjoyed about that particular restaurant is that they have a "no smoking" policy. Some of the other restaurants really bothered me, as I don't tolerate smoke well. Austria is a bit "late" in passing no smoking laws, but apparently they will be coming soon.

Rick's Guide book has lots of listings for great restaurants and sight seeing in Salzburg. One other thing you might consider is a day tour of the Eagle's Nest or Berchtesgaden, as it's an easy drive from Salzburg. I used Bob's Special Tours when I was there last month. Unfortunately the Eagle's Nest hadn't opened for the season yet (due to heavy snow on the access road), but I believe it's open now. There's also a Salt Mine you can tour in Berchtesgaden. The scenery in that part of the world is incredible! Make sure you have lots of Film / Memory Cards! Just above Berchtesgaden, there's also the Documentation Centre which can be toured, as well as a small portion of some of the bunker system. Most of the displays are in German, but English Audio guides are available.

Happy travels!
