Is there much to see if I were to drive between Dortmund and Berlin? And from Berlin to Dresden?

Yes, of course there is. For example the Teutoburger Forrest where the Barbarians beat the Romans which initiated the end of the Roman Empire: http://www.teutoburgerwald.de/teutoburgerforest/frameset.html . It's about an hour and a half from Dortmund by the A2 freeway. The palace gardens of Hannover are also quite worthwhile. And from Berlin to Dresden you could stop at Wittenberg where Martin Luther initiated the Protestant Church (charming old town) and Leipzig.
