Hello all! I'm back again as we have decided to make another December trip happen. We are just planning, but aren't sure where to go. We are thinking...fly to Munich (2 nights), drive to Vienna-4.5hrs (3 nights), Obertraun 3.5 hrs from Vienna (Awesome B&B for 4 nights and visit small villages near by), Salzburg (2 nights), then to Munich airport for a night before flying home. We will have a 4 year old and a 76 year old with us...Are we doing too much driving? Last year we felt very rushed (Munich, Fussen, castles, Zugspitze, Garmish, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Munich in 8 days.) Should we just do Munich, Salzburg and Obertraun so it's a bit more relaxed? I'm trying to find reasonably priced accommodations (Apt, Pension, B&B). Need some opinions here...Thank you!!
I'd leave out one of those destinations just for less travel time in winter's reduced hours of light. Personally I really like Munich and I'd want one more night there. In Salzburg, Hotel Jedermann has a very nice family room. It's not in the center of town but it is walkable and RS recommended. If the weather is bad, I'd rather be in Vienna.
Thanks for the response. I think we're going to stick to Munich, Salzburg and Obertraun. We would however like to experience the small villages around Hallstatt and Berchtesgaden. Anyone know if towns in the Berchtesgaden area are reachable in a day trip from Hallstatt, or shall we stay in that region a few days and day trip into Salzburg instead of staying in Salzburg?
