I am in the begining stages of planning a trip to Provence for about 6 women. We would like to be centrally located in order to take day trips by train to places like Cannes,St Remy-de-Provence, St. Tropez, Marseille, etc. Can anyone provide info on where to stay? cost is some consideration however we will be two to a room. Pat
Patricia, what an adventure! However, you might want to look at a good map. St. Remy is not on the train line, though it makes a great base if you have a car. Cannes and St. Tropez are in the Cote D'Azure, east of Provence.
Though there is lots to see in towns served by rail, you will be able to see and do more and more easily if you rent a car for at least part of your trip. Otherwise the only way you will be able to visit the Luberon hill towns or St. Remy or Les Baux or the Pont du Gard is through multiple train-bus connections or with a tour.
For lodging, a group together can really benefit from renting an apartment or gite rather than staying in hotels. You'd have more room and a kitchen and a good excuse to rub elbows with the locals at nearby markets.
Of course, it depends on the length of your stay and your other plans. If you'd rather spend a few days in Provence and a few on the Cote D'Azure, a series of hotels might be a better choice.
Don't be surprised that you didn't more answers: Adam got it right.
