Credit card pin number

I just bought my Alhambra tickets and I read in Rick Steves travel guide that you need to take the credit card you used and you need a pin number. The last time I was in Europe was 2010 and I don't remember needing a pin number. Do I really need a pin number? Thank you,
Bonnie

It's not a big deal to get one. Just call the customer service number on the back of your card, and you can probably set one over the phone. A pin would also give you the ability to get a cash advance from an ATM with your credit card if you needed it (in an extreme emergency).

For my card, they would NOT set it up over the phone, to prevent theft of my account. They mailed me the PIN and directions to change it. Rick mentions that this is common, so call right away, so you have time to get it set up before your trip. Yes, for some credit card transactions in Europe, you need the PIN.

Hi, Bonnie Thank you, thank you for asking this question. I totally forgot about PIN. We are leaving for Paris in two weeks. Each bank has different procedures for requesting PIN. I did a live chat at Capital One. They will send me the PIN in 5-7 business day. I could set up a PIN on-line with Citibank. Or call and they would also send the PIN. Again, thank you. You saved me a lot of aggravation.

Old advice: Get a four-digit PIN. Don't know if that still applies.

Four is safe. Over in the west section someone is posting a problem where they had an eight digit pin and it was not accept because the ATMs in Switzerland only accepted 6 digits. They claimed to have used the eight digits in France.

In reply to the previous poster Switzerland's ATM accept a four figure PIN number I live in the UK and we have four figure PINs and I have never had a problem.
