I was recently in Spain and used my US credit card with RENFE in person at Puerta de Atocha station in Madrid and in spite of having notified my credit card issuer that I would be in Spain they caused my credit card to be temporarily stopped on a fraud alert.

Have you determined if this was your credit card company's issue or one caused by RENFE?

I was just in Spain and travelled on Renfe twice - while the train experience is fine/nice, the customer service and infrastructure is horrendous. I sympathize. Terrible company.
