Munich restaurant

We will be in Munich for our anniversary in a few weeks and would like your recommendations for your favourite dinner spot. We are "foodies" but we don't need to break the bank for one dinner. Perhaps something just a little more special than the Hofbrauhaus! :)

Hofbraushuas? What a tourist trap. There are so many wonderful and reasonably priced restaurants. For Bavarian food (you WILL be in the heart of Bavaria), my favorite is the Spatenhuas, across the way from the opera (your hotel will know this place for sure). Best wiener schnitzel ever, but don't limit yourself to that. The schwienbraten, schweinhaxe and (my favorite) spanfaerkle is all wonderful. Even the salads are great. Spatenhaus is charming and gets a slightly better class of clientele and is maybe only a couple of Euros more expensive than similar places. For something else, Augustiner (on the main pedestrian drag) is my next favorite. Yes, it looks like a huge beer hall at first (not cozy like the Spatenhaus), but the atmosphere is really true Bavarian, you'll get a lot of locals eating here and the food is great as well. There's also Haxenbaur (owned by the same people who own the Spatenhaus) look in the window to see all the roasted pig knuckles on the spits and you'll know what to order. There are other nice places (Hackerhaus, Hacker-Pschorr, etc.) and you can't go wrong with any of these places if you want down-home Bavarian fare it's as authentic (and as good) as it gets, and none of these places will break the bank. But when I'm in Munich (couple of times every year) I stick with the Spatenhaus and Augustiner been to both places over a dozen times and NEVER been disappointed!

Thanks, Vince. We have been to the place across from the Opera, but couldn't remember the name! Enjoyed that one very much. We aren't just limited to Bavarian food - we are open to other cuisines, too.

The restaurant in the Hotel Le Meridien on the Bayerstrasse across from the RR station is excellent as is the restaurant in the Eden Wolff Hotel on the Arnulfstrasse across from the RR station on the other side.

Munich is known as Italy's most northerly city and has some amazing Italian food. I would suggest Via Veneto or Brenner, both in the Maximilianstr. Via Veneto is a little queiter, Brenner a little more hip. Both are alway amazing.

Thanks everyone. These are all great suggestions! We will have a tough time deciding and may just have to have more than one anniversary dinner. :)

It's been a decade since I've eaten in the Ratskeller in Munich, but I remember it as being nice, and it is very accessible. Here is a link to their menu.

You should consider Seehaus which is right on the shore of a lake in the English Garden only a few minutes from the city center.

Thanks, all! We have a reservation at Brenner. (And not a moment too early - the prime times were already booked!) I'll let you know how it turns out.

I think I would look on Trip Advisor to find a nice restaurant, one worthy of an anniversary. You can look at the websites, read the menus, read reviews and from the Google maps, see the location to make sure it is accessable.

On your non anniversary night, if you've never been to the Hoffbrau Haus it's really fun. If good food, great pretzels, great beer, a great atmosphere, and a German band is touristy then I'm very guilty. I've been to Munich a couple of times and love that place. If you never been and like that stuff I would recommend it.
