My wife and I would like to take an overnight train from Rome to somewhere in Germany before leaving the next morning for Amsterdam... any suggestions? We pretty much just want to eat/drink/experiance the German culture for a day before heading to Amsterdam. I've looked into Rothenburg but any other suggestions would be great!

Munich is the natural choice, as it's the capital of Bavaria and Bavarian culture is what most people think of when they think of German culture. In Munich you can drink a liter-sized beer at a beer hall or biergarten, eat giant portions of pork and potatoes, eat giant pretzels, hear oopmah music, even see actual Germans wearing traditional Bavarian clothing "just because". All the stereotypes! Plus the city center is VERY easily reachable from the train station (you can walk or take an U-Bahn) and quite compact for exploring. Rothenburg would be somewhat out of your way, as it's on a "spur" line. Munich wouldn't add any additional travel time to your trip.
