I'm going to be in Kerry next week and have pretty much worked out my itinerary. We'll be based in Kenmare, will rent a car (found the lowest rate through the Ryanair website. You don't have to fly Ryanair to benefit from their Hertz deals.) and daytrip thru the area. What are your must-see sights and attractions and what are your "hidden gems"? Thanks!!
The beach at Inch, on the Dingle Peninsula.
Two hidden gems I have found out about and put on my itinerary for September are the Beara Peninsula and Dursey Island. Both easily doable from Kenmare. Also I'm told Beara Peninsula much less crowded than the more popular Ring of Kerry.
By the way, Inch beach on Dingle is also on the list for my trip in the fall.
Have a great trip!
Oh... one more that is really easy to get to from Kenmare is ... Light house at Mizen head. If you are lucky you the seals will be in the water under the bridge to the light house. We have always been lucky... they are too cute.
If you can book a Ring of Kerry tour with Declan Finnegan, do so! He's the "singing cab driver" and does a great tour. His wife, Nora, has the Lace Center in Kenmare and does beautiful work. Because of family illness, she wasn't in when we were there, but her daughter filled in nicely and very politely, even tho', against my will, I had to hurry the visit.
I have done both Ring of Kerry and Beara and prefer Beara although Watertown and Valencia on Kerry are worth it. Muckross House in Killarney and the Killarney National Park are good. I love Kenmare town, perhaps my favorite in Ireland. Do see the stone ring. Whispering Pines B&B is great. Mary Fitzgerald does a salmon breakfast that is wonderful.
We came across road bowling on our last trip. what fun.
