Windsor Castle

Would appreciate impressions of Windsor Castle. I'm taking my 3 daughters there for a partial day trip and want to be sure it's worth the cost for all of us.

I went recently and was really impressed and I speak as a Brit who has absolutely no interest in our royal family! I thought the building was stunning and there are lots of interesting knick knacks to look at.

"no interest in Royal Family" ,, how sad,, even if its for the historical factor you would think it would be interesting..

I mean I am not interested in the present royal family. I am of course interested in the history of the royal family in that the history of Britain is tied up with royal history. I think most people use the phrase "royal family" to mean the present bunch. I have sometimes found that non-Brits assume that we Brits are all ardent fans of the royal family and I was trying to show that you don't need to be to enjoy Windsor Castle.

Windosr is one of my absolute favorite towns and the castle IS my favorite. Since the 1992 fire and restoration, the tour is now marvelous! You can literaly see the changes that have been made over the years. The gardens are also great. There is also an included exhibit of a doll house made for the Queen Mother by English caraftsmen. It is so realistic that the miniture wine bottles hold real samples of the vintages on their lables! Try to include time to wander around the town and over the bridge to Eaton. You can do a short cruise on the Thames and you get a different view of the castle from the boat- it is very nice. Enjoy!

Yes, Windsor Castle is very much worth the time and money. I need to correct something, the doll house that you will see was Queen Mary's doll house given to her in 1923. Everything in it is a miniature masterpiece. The paintings were painted by famous artist for the doll house as were the books written by famous authors for the doll house. After you tour the castle visit St. George Chapel it's so beautiful. After you exit the castle if you turn to your right and walk down to the road, turn to your left and follow the road down to Windsor Great Park.
There you can see the Long Walk, which is the private road for the Royal Family to use when they come or leave the castle. Also, you have a great view of the royal residence for the park. Also, if you want to see the Changing of the Guards Windsor Castle is a much better place to see it then Buckingham Palace. It takes place at 11:00am everyday. Hope you have a great time in Windsor.

Let me chime in my two cents that it would be very worth your time and the expense. Hubby and I went on our first trip to England and loved it so much that we took our daughter when we went back the following year. In addition to the castle, Windsor was just a nice little town to walk around in.

Windsor Castle is super! Quick train ride, lovely little town. The castle is amazing, and so is St. George's Chapel. You can wander around happily for hours. Worth every cent.

Wife and I enjoyed a tour of Buckingham Palace very much last fall (expensive but well worth it). Next trip we're going to Windsor Castle for sure!
