I was wondering what are some good whisky tours of Scotland? Looking for day or multi-day tours out of any city in Scotland. Thanks, Evan
At google maps enter 'whisky distillery scotland' and watch the dots pop up. Pick one near where you'll be. Alternatively google '<your brand> distillery scotland' and see if this will work for you. It seems like there's a distillery beside every creek. Dufftown has a wiskey museum which you might find interesing. There's a whisky heritage center in Edinburgh. One of the major outfits has a gimmick called the malt whisky trail which is nothing more than a sequential distillery list for all the brands they make. Frankly, once you've seen one distillery you've pretty much seen them all with the only difference being a slight variation in the speil.
While Ed may be technicaly correct, there is a difference in the whisky, if not the method for making it. There are several good tours- do it yourself, or individual, or true "tours" out there. I know that in the Speyside area (Aviemore, Campbelltown, Dufftown, Blair Athol, etc.) that there are whisky taxis that will do the driving for you. EDIT- Many of the Speyside distilleries can also be reached easily by bus or train. PS- they happen to be my favorite single malts- especally Belvinie 12 Double wood and Dahlwhinnie 18 year reserve- just sweet enough with a hint of heather and smoke, but not too peaty or salty.
There is a great book that you should get. It's Raw Spirit by Iain Banks. He was commissioned by a publisher to search for the perfect dram. The book is about that search and encompasses not only the whisky, but the Scottish countryside and people. It's a great book and will help you figure out where you want to go sip some whisky. Pam
These are some websites about Scotch Whisky and distillereis. You might find some good ideas on any of these. http://www.maltwhiskytrail.com/ http://www.scotchwhisky.net/distilleries/ http://www.scotlandwhisky.com/ http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uslinks/scotch.html http://www.aboutinverness.co.uk/inverness-city-guide/whisky-and-castles/scottish-whisky.htm
When we were around the Spey River, we did several whiskey stills on the tour. I combined this with a castle tour, so my wife was happy also. 1/2 whiskey and 1/2 castle worked fine for us. Plus, gave me time to sober up between stills.
